How does the eye work?

Developmental problems, injury, or breakdown of any part of the eye can lead to changes in vision and vision loss. Each part of the eye works to turn light into images. If one or more parts of the eye are not working properly, the light information that our brain receives may change or not arrive at all.

Help Advocate

Did you know over 8 million Canadians are living with a blinding eye disease that puts them at risk of blindness? Already 1.2 million are living with uncorrectable vision loss. By 2050, these numbers will grow to 13.8 million who are living with a blinding eye disease, and 2 million who will be living with uncorrectable vision loss.

But this doesn’t have to happen. Already, research has discovered and delivered treatments that 3 out of 4 people, if diagnosed early, can stabilize their sight.

The cost of vision loss and blindness in Canada was $39.2 billion in 2019. It’s estimated that by 2050 the cost will be $56 billion (unadjusted for inflation).

That’s why it’s so important to champion the development and delivery of safe and effective treatments and cures for vision loss in Canada. On this page, you’ll find information about our work to bring new treatments and cures to Canadians, and opportunities to support our efforts.
