Dr. Brittany Carr: Innovating & Creating New Treatments

Dr. Brittany Carr, University of Alberta, who was recently awarded a $200,000 Early Career Research Grant from Fighting Blindness Canada, is diving deep into the mysteries of photoreceptors—specialized cells that allow us to see. Her project focuses on a gene called prominin-1 (PROM1), known to play a critical role in retinal diseases like bull’s-eye macular dystrophy and cone-rod dystrophy.

Dr. Carr is investigating how PROM1 functions in the eye and why its mutations cause vision to deteriorate. She aims to discover new gene therapies by testing how efficient different splice variants are for PROM 1-associated blindness.
